Certified for freedom camping
Pacific Horizon’s Vehicles are certified for freedom camping under New Zealand’s current green-warrant rules.
Every Pacific Horizon rental motorhome is designed for independent travel and is certified as a self-contained vehicle for freedom camping in designated areas, subject to local camping rules and a current green warrant.
Important for 2026 travellers:
The transition to the new self-containment system ended on 7 June 2026. Rental vehicles used for freedom camping must have the current green warrant certification. The new requirements include a permanently fixed toilet; portable toilets do not qualify.

Certified Self-contained For The New NZ Requirements
The green warrant is the current evidence that a vehicle has been certified under New Zealand’s regulated self-containment system. The certification is administered through the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board framework.
The regulations require a warrant card containing identifying vehicle details, issue and expiry dates, the certification authority, the maximum certified number of occupants, and a unique vehicle certification number.
Freedom To Explore - With The Right Certification
Fixed toilet
Under the current rules, a vehicle must have a permanently fixed toilet to be certified self-contained for freedom camping. Pacific Horizon’s motorhomes have an internal toilet facility.
Water & wastewater
Certified self-contained vehicles must meet requirements covering water supply, wastewater management and the ability to manage occupants’ sanitary needs without external services.
Display the warrant
When required for freedom camping, the green warrant card must be displayed so its details are visible from outside the vehicle. The vehicle’s certification can also be checked against the national register.
Local rules still apply
A green warrant does not mean you can camp anywhere. Freedom camping remains subject to local bylaws, signage, DOC rules and any site-specific restrictions.
Please remember: “Certified self-contained” and “freedom camping permitted everywhere” are not the same thing. Always check the rules for the specific location before staying overnight.
Freedom Camping In New Zealand
With the right certification, your Pacific Horizon motorhome gives you the flexibility to explore New Zealand independently. But freedom camping rules can vary between regions and individual locations.
Check Before You Stay
- Local council freedom camping bylaws
- DOC restrictions
- On-site signs
- Designated camping areas
- Maximum stay limits
